Cardiac and Vascular Surgery
Turkey is home to some of the world’s most advanced centers in cardiac and vascular surgery. With high success rates, internationally experienced cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons, and access to robotic and minimally invasive surgical techniques, Turkey has become a major health tourism destination for the treatment of complex cardiovascular diseases.
In this vital field, Need Health connects you with Turkey’s leading fully-equipped heart centers and multidisciplinary teams, ensuring you have access to the most current and personalized treatment options.
Major Cardiac and Vascular Surgical Areas:
1. Coronary Artery (Bypass) Surgery
Goal: To restore blood flow to the heart muscle by creating a new pathway (bypass) using a vessel taken from your own body (mammary artery, radial artery, saphenous vein) for blocked or narrowed coronary arteries.
Methods:
Open Heart Surgery (Sternotomy): The traditional and common method. Uses a heart-lung machine (CPB).
Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS CABG): Can be performed through small incisions, with or without partial use of the heart-lung machine. Results in less pain and faster recovery.
Robotic Coronary Bypass Surgery: The most advanced minimally invasive method. Performed with extreme precision using robotic arms.
2. Heart Valve Surgery
Goal: To repair (valvuloplasty) or replace (valve replacement) narrowed (stenosis) or leaky (regurgitation) heart valves.
Valve Types:
Biological Valves: Made from porcine or bovine tissue. Have a limited lifespan and usually do not require long-term blood thinners.
Mechanical Valves: Made from durable materials. Require lifelong use of blood thinners (e.g., warfarin).
Methods: Open surgery (sternotomy), minimally invasive approaches (mini-thoracotomy), or catheter-based Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) for high-risk patients.
3. Aortic Surgery
Aortic Aneurysm Surgery: Replacement of a thoracic or abdominal aortic aneurysm at risk of rupture with a synthetic graft.
Aortic Dissection Surgery: An emergency, life-saving operation to replace the torn segment of the aorta with a graft.
Endovascular Aortic Repair (EVAR/TEVAR): A less invasive method involving the placement of a stent-graft inside the aneurysm through the groin.
4. Arrhythmia Surgery
Ablation Therapy: A catheter-based procedure to destroy (burn or freeze) abnormal electrical foci or pathways. Used for arrhythmias like atrial fibrillation (AFib).
Maze Procedure: A surgical technique performed during open-heart surgery to cut abnormal electrical pathways, especially in patients with persistent AFib.
Pacemaker and ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) Implantation.
5. Congenital Heart Disease Surgery
Repair or correction of congenital heart defects (ASD, VSD, Tetralogy of Fallot, etc.) in adult and pediatric patients.
6. Peripheral Vascular Surgery
Carotid Artery Surgery: Carotid endarterectomy or stenting to clear narrowed carotid arteries and reduce stroke risk.
Lower Extremity Bypass Surgery: To prevent gangrene risk and relieve claudication (walking pain) caused by blockages in leg arteries.
Varicose Vein Surgery and Endovenous Laser Ablation: Treatment for superficial venous insufficiency.
